Safety Tips Every Traveler Must Follow

Save Emergency Contacts

Always keep the local police control room number and family contacts on speed dial. Quick access to help can save precious time in emergencies.

The important emergency numbers in India are  as follows:-

  • 112 - National Emergency Number (a single number for police, ambulance, fire)
  • 1091 - Women Helpline
  • 1033 - Emergency Relief Centre on National Highways
  • 1069 - Anti-Poison
  • 1073 - Road Accident
  • 1800 111 363 - Tourist Helpline (Especially for foreign nationals)
  • 131 - Indian Railway General Enquiry

Please save above numbers in your phonebook.

Share Your Location in Real Time

Share your location with trusted friends or family. If anything happens, they’ll know your last location and can alert the authorities.

Avoid Isolated Roads at Night

Driving on unknown routes at night increases risk. Stick to well-lit highways and avoid blindly following Google Maps, as it may suggest unsafe shortcuts.

Never Stop for Strangers

If someone asks for help in a deserted area, think twice before stopping. Many incidents involve criminals pretending to need assistance. Trust your instincts and keep moving.

Be Careful When Parking or Resting

If you’re travelling in an RV or need to rest, choose safe spots like 24-hour petrol pumps, populated parking areas, or near a police station. Isolated areas can attract unwanted attention.

Know How to Use SOS Features

If using Uber, Ola, or other ride services, locate the SOS button in the app. In case of trouble, one press can alert authorities and share your live location.

Check Reviews Before Booking Stays

Many travellers prefer Airbnb or homestays, but some may not be safe. Read detailed reviews and prefer accommodations from well-known hotel chains, even if they cost a little more.

Carry a Self-Defense Tool

A pepper spray or air gun can be a lifesaver. Pepper spray temporarily blinds attackers, giving you enough time to escape. An air gun can also scare off small-time criminals.

Be Loud & Call for Help

If confronted by an attacker, do not stay silent. Scream for help—most criminals fear public attention. Staying quiet makes you an easy target.

Stay Mentally Prepared

Confidence and awareness are your biggest weapons. Train yourself in basic self-defence or take a workshop on handling dangerous situations. Being prepared boosts your chances of staying safe.

Conclusion

Safety should never be taken lightly, whether travelling in India or abroad. While crime rates may not be the highest here, precautions can save lives. Follow these safety tips, stay alert, and ensure your road trip remains an adventure, not a disaster.
